Verdant Avenue by Robert Mills Architects

The Australian architecture studio Robert Mills Architects created this magnificent house in collaboration with the interior designers Scott Walker and Robert Backhouse. The house with fully glazed facade, giving the most natural light and even greater feeling of volume is located in Melbourne. Verdant Avenue perfectly showcases the modern RMA aesthetic – form, function and detail alongside nature at its finest. This example of sustainable architecture dispels the myth that being sustainable requires the sacrifice of glamour, luxury and pleasure.
The client’s open brief simply commissioned a ‘luxurious, contemporary inner city family home’. A striking 3.5 meter wide sculptural staircase anchors ground to first and second floors, complete with floor to 3.5 meters ceilings glass windows, opulent alpaca carpet, internal lift and motorized oversize exterior windows louvers.
What the house does best though, is to create a seamless connection between indoors and out. The planting complements the architecture, and residents and visitors, as well as passers-by, can enjoy the wonderful vista of trees that surround the house. The most magnificent specimen is an 80-year-old pin oak tree in the front garden which served as an inspiration for the rest of the planting. On a garden-proud street this house is definitely one of the most verdant.
